Homs Celebrates Circassian Heritage Day at the Cultural Center Theater
The Cultural Center Theater in Homs hosted the Circassian
Heritage Day event, organized by the Homs
Directorate of Culture in cooperation with the Najeeb
Foundation, as part of the Impact Makers Club
activities for children during the mid‑year break.
Reviving Heritage and Promoting Cultural Diversity
The event aims to revive Circassian cultural heritage and promote
the concept of Syrian cultural and linguistic diversity as an
essential component of the shared national identity.
Aya Asleem, Head of the Heritage Department at the
Directorate of Culture, explained that the activity focused on introducing
children to Circassian heritage and reviving the shared cultural memory. She
noted the positive interaction from the children, whose questions enriched the
atmosphere and added vitality to the session.
Traditional Exhibits and Folkloric Performances
Najeeb Ibrahim Asran, Chairman of the Foundation’s
Board of Trustees, highlighted that the event included a display of
Circassian traditional products, such as traditional foods and
folk costumes, in addition to folkloric performances, plays, stories, and proverbs in the
Circassian language. He emphasized the importance of passing
this heritage to future generations in a way that strengthens identity and
national belonging.
Artistic and Cultural Participation
Participant Sibsa Ghablazouq shared her experience presenting
Circassian stories, dances, and a traditional song, stressing the importance of
such activities in bringing Circassian culture closer to the younger
generation.
Meanwhile, Nurhan Ghablazouq contributed several traditional
dishes, including the well‑known Circassian sweet “Halj”,
expressing pride in showcasing the richness of Circassian cuisine.
A Living Heritage Reflecting Syria’s Cultural Richness
Circassian heritage is considered an integral part of Syria’s
cultural and linguistic diversity, encompassing a wide range of
customs, traditions, music, clothing, and traditional foods passed down through
generations. Such events play a vital role in preserving heritage and
introducing society to its cultural value, reinforcing the
presence of diverse cultural components within the broader Syrian identity.
